The Lake Chelan Research Institute’s mission is to establish the long-term trends in the water quality of Lake Chelan. Its clear waters are a vital resource to the community and we must understand trends in water quality if we are to preserve the lake’s ultra-low nutrient status.

LCRI Goals

  • Collect key water quality data regularly in collaboration with Chelan County, Washington State Dept. of Ecology, University of Washington and other organizations to ensure that we have complete, unbiased, long-term data we need to protect the lake.

  • Explore Lake Chelan and its watershed, educate the public, attract researchers, and heighten awareness of the lake’s value

  • Create a digital model and database for the lake that are enduring and accessible for lake management

LCRI Trivia

Lake Chelan is the 3rd deepest lake in the United States and the largest lake in Washington State by any measure. Water quality data has been collected infrequently and sporadically compared to other valued lakes such as Lake Tahoe and Flathead Lake. In short, Lake Chelan is vastly under-studied and we need to act now to ensure that Lake Chelan remains such a special place.

We are funded through donations and all participants volunteer their time. The roles of citizen scientists, engineers, and students are crucial to our success. We operate under the 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsorship of the Lake Chelan Recreation Development Foundation.
